Smarter factories are now achievable with easy IIoT adoption options

As we crawl out of a global pandemic, CIOs and CEOs of manufacturing organisations are re-examining their digital capabilities and what it is that will help them survive future challenges. Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine has prompted an energy crisis and is driving other key decisions.

Manufacturing, without doubt, has been slower than other industries to harness the power of smart technologies to connect the entire supply chain. The numbers of potential industrial assets that remain unconnected globally are still high. While there are many reasons for
this, one that constantly comes to the fore is security. 

However, in 2022 and beyond, we will see more organisations looking for adoption to accelerate their smart manufacturing. When one starts this journey, a key element of its success is ensuring that
there is a solid platform on which to build. Most organisations need to evaluate whether to build their IIoT solution in-house or subscribe to a pre-built solution. There are also a lot of options with open-source building blocks; however, it’s important to
understand how they can be adopted, scaled and supported in the long term. 

The market for building your own IIoT is broadening all the time. However, immature choices can pose a challenge for future growth and scalability. Using open-source software and custom
hardware, you can connect one machine, but what about 10, 100 or even 1,000? This is where you need to consider how you can make the end-to-end solution secure and how the solution can be scaled.
