National Apprenticeship Week empowers young people to build the future

Focusing on the theme ‘Build the Future’, over 1,200 virtual and in-person events took place across England as part of National Apprenticeship Week (7-13 February) this year.

Despite the pandemic, the future is looking bright for apprenticeships, with 40 percent more people starting apprenticeships in the first quarter of 2021/22 than in the previous year. 

Here are just a few takeaways
from this year’s celebration:

• First launched in 2017, the pioneering degree apprenticeship programme from Siemens Digital Industries has helped to supercharge the careers of 60 engineers. Working with key UK companies (including AstraZeneca, Saint-Gobain
Formula and Zeeco Europe), the programme combines academic modules in automation, robotics and embedded systems, Siemens S7 Certified PLC programmer training and accreditation, and a workplace project to solve a real-world problem. The outcome is a
degree-qualified engineer with a range of practical skills and technical understanding needed to capitalise on the opportunities of Industry 4.0.

• A survey conducted by BAE Systems revealed a promising 73% of young people would
consider an apprenticeship. The company is set to recruit 900 apprentices across the UK this year, with many of these roles located in some of the most economically challenged regions...
