Users of ABB robots can now benefit from the new space-saving Panel Mount Controller (PMC). The controllers form part of a robotic control unit designed to improve application planning, set up, operation and maintenance of single or multiple robot cells.
The new controller provides the same functionality as the existing IRC5 range but at only 250mm deep, a reduction of 60% thickness compared to the IRC5 robot controller, it can easily be located in applications where floor space is at a premium, such as high density automated production lines.
As the controllers are supplied in chassis form for mounting in a control panel, the technology is ideal to help manufacturers meet special plant requirements because the panel can be fitted into a unit, such as a hygienic stainless steel enclosure, which can withstand washdown cleaning. The controller is also equipped with modules that specifically address aspects of robot control, axis drives and process control with additional optimisation of motion for all robots and external axes. This modularity means that individual aspects of each robot can be adjusted to meet the needs of the production line.

Each controller can control up to four robots and is complete with ABB’s intelligent TrueMove and QuickMove technologies. Both features can automatically optimise the movements of all robots and the external axis, allowing for increased flexibility and productivity. The controller’s MultiMove functionality allows fully synchronous operation of multiple robots, allowing for co-ordination of complex motion patterns. The use of MultiMove on the factory floor also opens up opportunities for production in application areas that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to address (for example, multiple robots operating on an object moved by a robot or a positioner).
Offering easy integration with existing designs, the Panel Mount Controller is ideal for use with ABB’s FlexPendant handheld terminal. Featuring an easy-to-use touch screen with windows-style operation, the FlexPendant provides manufacturers with an intuitive user interface allowing the user to quickly and easily tailor robotic functions to the manufacturing process.
