ifm electronic has introduced the SM Series Magmeter, a magnetic inductive flow meter that is designed to reliably detect the flow rate of conductive media up to 25 litres per minute. The SM Magmeter’s stainless steel, mechanically-robust design is mounted in-line providing a compact, low-profile installation for process control.
The sensor display includes a 4-digit numeric display with eight integrated LEDs that together indicate the flow rate (gal/min or l/min), total volume (gallons or litres), and temperature (°C or °F) of all conductive media. Simple pushbutton programming quickly establishes application parameters and the flow meter can be setup to provide a switching output, analogue output and pulsed output.
The sensor offers high accuracy with a response time of less than 0.15 seconds and a repeatability of ±0.2%. Electrical connection is made through an M12 connector.
The principle of operation is based upon Faraday's Law of electromagnetic induction that detects the flow velocity of an electronically conducting fluid through a defined pipe diameter. Faraday’s Law states that the voltage induced across any conductor as it moves at right angles through a magnetic field is proportional to the velocity of that conductor.
Typical applications include: flow and temperature monitoring through heat exchangers, monitoring cooling water on welding machines, batching applications, totalise flow of process water, pump run dry protection, and guarding welding equipment against loss of cooling water.
