‘Brexit means Brexit’ – but what does it mean for you?

To say the past year has been turbulent is an understatement. Industry has been thrown into turmoil with the dual challenges of the global pandemic and Brexit, with businesses scrambling to adapt to new, vastly uncertain circumstances.

Things are, slowly but surely, beginning to look up. At the time of writing, more than 60 million vaccine doses have been administered and the UK Government has managed to scrape through
a last-minute Brexit deal.

But how has this deal affected UK manufacturing since we officially left the EU?

A new survey, conducted by accountancy network, MHA, revealed that 61 percent of manufacturers have
had to change their business practices as a result of Brexit. 

The survey’s respondents complained that the last-minute nature of the deal meant that they didn’t have enough time to prepare and
led to confusion with HMRC, couriers, and freight carriers. 

Although just over half of businesses said that they had not faced obstacles when trading with the EU or Northern Ireland, the Brexit agreement
has been both costly and disruptive – with shortages of raw materials, in particular, being a key issue.
