Self-powered odometers for goods wagons are wireless and maintenance free

Motor Technology has launched a new range of odometers designed for use on goods wagons that are entirely self-powered and require no batteries or external power supply.

The rugged incremental encoders, manufactured by Lenord and Bauer, are mounted on the bearing covers without the need for any wiring and are completely maintenance free.

The units obtain the necessary power by induction from the rotational movement of a magnetic assembly that sits on
the bearing's pressure plate. This allows their use on goods wagons without the need for batteries. The data is acquired contactless and then stored by the encoder in an internal non-volatile memory for any desired length of time.

In contrast to GPS/GSM-based systems, the odometer
does not incur any operating costs, while the portable RFID reader reduces maintenance expense. Service engineers can export the data locally via a USB interface or WLAN for further processing.

Wheel set ratings as well as, what are referred to as, hot-box thresholds, which were stored
in the odometer during the installation process, allow monitoring of not only the distance covered, but also any deterioration on the health of the bearings by measuring their temperature. This data enables users to operate wagons safely and economically and plan maintenance, as data can
be made available to office applications, ERP systems or maintenance software.

Maintenance operations can be performed exactly when they are needed, ensuring greater wagon availability and lower repair costs. In the case of leasing, the tamper-proof solution also allows transparent billing based on the actual mileage covered by the goods wagons.
