Skip the queue with Amazon’s AI shopping basket

Amazon introduces new smart shopping basket that “makes a quick grocery trip even quicker” by enabling you to skip the checkout queue.

The tool allows you to get your shopping in four easy steps:

1) Sign into the Amazon app using your personal QR code

2) Add the bags to your basket

3) Scan your items, listen for the beep then add them to your basket. If your item doesn’t have a barcode – for example, fruit and vegetables – you can simply tap ‘Add PLU item’ and then type in the PLU number and confirm the weight of the item.

4) Go through the Dash Cart line and skip the checkout queue! Your receipt will be emailed to you.

The Amazon Dash Cart automatically identifies grocery items through a combination of sensors, cameras and computer vision algorithms. Then, when the customer exits through the Dash Cart lane, their payment is automatically processed and charged to the credit card attached to their Amazon account on the app.

At least for the moment, the Amazon Dash Cart cannot be used for your big weekly shopping trip. Limited to two bags or fewer, it is designed for small- to medium-sized grocery trips – perhaps when you need to stock up on a few items after work.

The cart will first be made available at the Amazon grocery store in Woodland Hills, California later this year. Amazon has not yet disclosed its future plans for its Dash Cart – will it pave the way for a fully cashier-less shopping experience?
