Flying into the future of manufacturing

In my column this month, Kevin Bull – Product Strategy Director at Columbus – explains how introducing drone technology into manufacturing processes can simplify inspections, asset monitoring and delivery procedures in plants and boost productivity.

Did you know that, in 2016, PwC estimated that the drone market was worth $127 billion? Yet, with such high value placed on this technology there has been surprisingly low uptake in the manufacturing industry – manufacturers only account for 1.5 percent of drone deployments. 

For the manufacturing industry, drones are able to capture information in ways that are typically too difficult, dangerous or boring for humans. Of course, they need supporting digital infrastructure to ensure the success of drone deployments within the industry but if manufacturers focus on implementing drones along with complementary technology, then they will see some major operational improvements.
