DC-DC converters operate across all train battery voltages

Relec Electronics announces the release of the EC7BW18-72 ultra-wide input, board-mount 20-Watt DC-DC Converters from Cincon.

The converters operate from 8.5V-160V DC in a single range, making them ideal for all common battery voltages. Designed primarily for railway applications, the versatile series offers a one-size-fits-all power solution from 24V diesel sprinters, London Underground trains (52V), freight locomotives (72V) right up to electric mainline trains at 110V. 

The rugged EC7BW18-72 DC-DC converters are qualified in accordance with rail industry regulatory requirements, namely: EN 50155 (EN 61373) – for shock and vibration, EN 45545-2 – for fire and smoke, and is certified to IEC 62368-1 and UL 62368-1 2nd edition (Reinforced Insulation) and meet EN 50155/EN 50121-3-2 with External Circuits. In addition, the wide input range means the DC-DC converters meet the requirements of RIA12 Surge A on 24V and 52V systems (3.5 x Vi nom 20mS).

The DC-DC converters have high efficiency (up to 90%) and a case operating temperature range of -40°C to +105°C. An optional heat sink is available to extend the full power range. The very low, no-load power consumption (8mA), makes the converters particularly suitable for use in energy-critical systems.

Standard control functions include remote on/off (positive or negative) and +15%, -20% adjustable output voltage (single output only). Units are protected against input under-voltage lockout, output over-current, output over-voltage, and over-temperature and continuous short circuit conditions.

The capability to operate with 12V batteries also makes the EC7BW18-72 DC-DC converters suitable for use in the demanding automotive sector.

The EC7BW is available to sample now with production lead-times currently six to eight weeks. The technical team at Relec is available now to provide guidance on the design-in process, samples and commercial support from design right through to production.
