What Brexit blues?

I haven’t touched on the subject of Brexit yet in any of my columns (deliberately), but some new research hit my desk a few weeks ago and it was very interesting, so I thought I’d take a closer look.

A new state-of-the-nation study into how businesses in the engineering industry are prepared for Brexit, has revealed a staggering 34 percent of businesses believe the process of exiting the EU is currently having a positive impact on their business, while 21 percent feel it hasn’t had any impact at all.

How is this possible? It was only in the back-end of last year that IHS Markit stated the UK manufacturing’s recent downturn was due to the uncertainty surrounding Brexit. It was the “lack of transparency caused by Brexit ambiguity” that was holding back investment and that “the delay to Brexit had a noticeable impact on stock holdings and purchasing activity.”

Yet this new report, commissioned by global sales, negotiation and communication experts, Huthwaite International, shows that post-Brexit business prospects remain positive, with 27 percent of businesses believing their growth potential will prosper post-Brexit, regardless of the outcome.
