Modular power supply offers quiet, cool running

Claimed to be the industry’s first fanless 1kW modular power supply, the COOLX1000 offers quiet operation in sensitive environments.

The compact power supply, from Advanced Energy, measures 6.5 x 10in (165 x 254mm) and is 1U high. It is available from Relec Electronics.

The U-channel design is based on innovative, patented, resonant technology for efficiency and reliability. It provides up to 1,000W with 100% natural convection cooling, negating the need for a fan or baseplate cooling, which eliminates acoustic noise and vibration.

Efficiency is 94% and MTBF is in excess of 400,000 hours, some 25% better than competing solutions. Safety features include a high input surge protection (4kV line to protect earth or PE) and reverse energy protection to eliminate the need for blocking diodes.

Two COOLX1000 versions are available, the CX10S and the CX10M. The CX10S is certified to IEC62368-1 and IEC60950 for industrial applications and the CX10M is certified to IEC60601-1 3rd edition and IEC60601-1-2 4th edition (EMC) and ISO13485, making it ideal for medical applications. It offers 2x MOPP and is also MIL-STD-810G-qualified, making it suitable for high-rel applications.

Both models can be populated with up to six CoolMods, providing up to 12 isolated DC outputs ranging from 2.5V to 58.0V. Outputs can be configured and connected in parallel or series for higher output current and/or higher output voltages.

System designers can use either analogue or digital communications (PMBus) for communications, power control and management.

Target applications are clinical diagnostic and radiology imaging equipment; test and measurement, industrial automation equipment, telecommunications, audio equipment; and naval and ground-based radar systems.

No factory set up is required and the supplies are covered by a five-year warranty.

Relec Electronics also stocks the four-slot COOLX600 and the fan-cooled COOLX1800 from Advanced Energy (formerly Excelsys).

Relec Electronics has been supplying power solutions for the harshest environments for over 40 years and offers a free-of-charge service to guide customers through the design-in process to optimise a selected product for a specific application.
