Equipping the workforce for Industry 4.0

Manufacturing is being digitised and the manufacturing process is changing dramatically. This is a phenomenon known as Industry 4.0 (the fourth industrial revolution) and its benefits are immense. These include enabling the automation and streamlining of repetitive steps in manufacturing processes, resulting in enormous increases in efficiency.

Former Business Secretary, Greg Clark MP, said that the increased adoption of digital technologies could generate “£455 billion over the next 10
years, boosting productivity, creating thousands of new highly skilled jobs and enabling more efficient, cleaner production systems”. There are clearly significant gains to be
made by manufacturers who get it right.

With changes to technology come different skills requirements. Manufacturers cannot simply stick with the status quo
and expect to reap the benefits. 

The technological shift of Industry 4.0 is powered by huge amounts of data, which was not previously available
or produced and the ability to effectively handle this information will dictate the benefits it will bring.
