Race-Tec NAK, possibly better known for the design and manufacture of high-performance, bespoke seals and precision elastomeric components for the motorsport industry, makes use of three materials in the production of these specialist low friction seals and precision components:
Lip Material - Polytetrafluoroethylene [PTFE]
Due to its fluorocarbon structure, Polytetrafluoroethylene [PTFE] offers unequalled chemical resistance and an extremely wide operating temperature range, from approx. –250°C to above 250°C.
Polytetrafluoroethylene [PTFE] also offers excellent low friction behaviour throughout its temperature range, thus making the ideal sealing lip material for specialist applications in which the ability to cope with high surface speeds, high or low temperatures and/or chemical resistance are essential.
Elastomeric Substrate - Perfluoroelastomers [FFKM]
Perfluoroelastomers offer many of the properties of PTFE, but with the added advantage of the inherent flexibility of an elastomer. With their fully fluorinated chemical composition Perfluoroelastomers offer excellent resistance to a wide range of chemical substances, including: fuels, lubricating oils and greases, solvents, organic and inorganic oxides, acids, alkalis, etc.
Further to this, Perfluoroelastomers offer exceptional high temperature resistance, with an operating range from approx. - 25°C to above 300°C, they easily surpass the temperature performance of the more generally used sealing elastomers.
Metal housing Material - High corrosion resistant alloys and light weight alloys
High corrosion resistant alloys are used for the housings and outer rings of high performance sealing component subject to thermal and chemical attack. Where weight and strength are the requirement, materials such as Titanium can also be used.
