Spain has re-emerged as a leader in both the development and deployment of photovoltaic technologies as a renewable source of power. A pioneer in the field in the years following the Millennium, it lost some momentum when the global financial turndown of 2008 led to it introducing a steep solar tax on existing and new installations.
This was repealed in 2017 and Spain is once again on track with the European Union directive that requires all member states to produce 20 percent of their energy from renewables by 2020. Subsequently the European Investment Bank announced a €450m finance package to support Spanish solar and onshore wind projects, which itself has attracted further international investment.
