Suitable cases for (heat) treatment: Recruitment in a changing world

A survey of over 6,000 firms, carried out by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) at the end of 2018, showed that 81 percent of manufacturers had difficulty in finding staff with the right qualifications or experience.

At the same time, the Engineering Employers’ Federation (EEF) reported a similar scenario among its members, with jobs that are considered ‘hard to fill’ currently standing at 29 percent (a minimal shift from 2013 when this stood at 30 percent), with over two-thirds of manufacturers saying that applicants lack technical skills.

In addition, 40 percent of manufacturers said that 40 percent of their workforce is over the age of 50 and there is a growing need to attract the next generation.

This overall picture is further accentuated in the case of small specialist manufacturers that not only serve a niche market but also require very specialist skills.
