Adhesive tapes take an oil bath

Early in 2018 the application engineers at Lohmann Tapes were presented with an interesting challenge: could they bond a magnet onto a steel shaft? “Yes they could” came the answer.

But could they permanently bond a magnet onto a steel shaft that spent all its time immersed in a hot oil bath at temperatures at up to 140°C inside an oil pump? “We will see” said the application engineers. And after extensive testing at Lohmann’s R&D facility, they saw that they could. Further testing by the OEM confirmed that the tape exceeded the design specification by a considerable margin and as a result you will now find Lohmann’s DuploTEC 10410 tape holding magnets to shafts inside thousands of these oil pumps across Europe.

This DuploTEC structural bonding tape is just one of many families of high integrity engineered adhesives and tapes available from Lohmann that will be on show on their stand at the Southern Manufacturing Exhibition at Farnborough in February. Visitors to the Lohmann stand can see, examine and discuss the full range of engineered bonding solutions and the precision die-cutting facilities which are also available on site in Milton Keynes.

Additionally, and of especial interest to engineers from the electronics sector, Lohmann will also be showing the latest generation of thermal management materials to have been introduced to the UK. For example, the company is the sole UK and European supplier of Cirlex, one of the latest generation of thermal management materials to have emerged from the USA. Here, thanks to its ultra-high specification, this Kapton based material has found favour with many OEMs in the aerospace and defence industry, including suppliers of electronic components and subsystems to the space sector, an area of application that makes some of the greatest temperature control demands in the field of electronics.

On stand for the duration of the exhibition will be hand-picked Lohmann technical staff who are experts in the application of bonding solutions across the fields of mechanical design, electronics, automotive, lightweighting and medical devices.
