How a VSD can really save you money

Andy Preston, UK drives product manager at ABB explains how to tap into the hidden cost benefits of using today’s digital variable speed drives.

Do not fall into the trap of believing a variable speed drive (VSD) is a commodity prod-uct. To use a drive merely to start or stop a motor and make it go faster or slower, is to miss the huge cost saving potential built within the product. The problem is that not enough people know about the hidden potential within a VSD that can completely revo-lutionise the user experience and the profit of a production line.

More users need to ask questions like:

• “What more can a VSD do for me?”
• “What am I planning to use the drive for and am I planning to use other compo-nents?”
• “What have I purchased in the VSD that I am simply not using?”
• “What external components am I buying that are already included within the drive?”

The conversation needs to move from “How much is the drive?” to “How can the drive help me save money?”
