In medical applications, the manufacturing tolerances are extremely tight and have to be controlled exactly because of the physical size of the components involved but also the essential safety critical nature of the applications they are deployed in. 

Sophisticated materials are often required such as platinum iridium used in the heating coil of cauterising equipment used in gynaecological equipment. The operational environment for many medial applications is of course extremely sensitive, involving not only equipment used for the external treatment of conditions but also invasive procedures. So, for example, care has to be taken to select the appropriate materials to be able to withstand exposure to the acidic characteristics of human blood.
