Airbus selects lithium-ion battery systems

Saft has announced that Airbus has chosen its lithium-ion battery systems as the starting and emergency power supply on the A350 aircraft.

After a cooperation on alkaline technologies since the origin of Airbus aircraft in the 1970s, Saft’s technical expertise and battery performances in the new technology led to this selection, which will enlarge the portfolio of available technologies for a suitable adaptation to each programme.

This will be the first programme in Airbus’ history to use this new battery system.

This contract illustrates the successful adaptation of Saft’s 10+ years of research in advanced li-ion battery technology for specific, demanding applications.

The battery system includes an integrated monitoring and charging system using proprietary Saft know-how in the relevant electrochemistry algorithms.
