Relay Controlled Lighting Improves Rail Station Facilities

The Modern Facilities at Stations (MFAS) programme is currently being undertaken at Category B to E railway stations across the national network. The first installation is at Hazel Grove near Manchester, where automatic toilets are being installed. All functions, including entry/exit, toilet clean, lighting, ventilation and heating, are under microprocessor control, but conventional switching devices are installed between the PLC and electrical systems. The all-important lighting circuits, for example, are switched via Finder 44.62 PCB relays - two-pole models with 10A rated contacts. Relays of this type are normally limited to 5, possibly 8A capacity, so the higher capacity of the 44.62 was a deciding factor in its choice for this application, where durability and longevity are important issues. The 44.62 is available with a range of coil operating voltages from 6 to 125V dc, and it is capable of working at temperatures between -40°C and +85°C.
