The company specialises in the research and development of ultrasonic test equipment used extensively in the QA of medical devices, to provide industry with ultrasonic non-destructive testing (NDT) capability and within academia and national measurement institutes throughout the world.

Precision Acoustic’s Rexolite or Perspex wedges are often used with longitudinal and shear wave probes from the extensive range of ultrasonic transducers on offer from the company. Wedges can be tailor-made to a customer’s specific requirements for use with any size or frequency of probe.

The key feature of the Precision Acoustic product is the surface of the wedge which incorporates pyramidal scattering combined with a customised acoustic absorber that is impedance matched with the wedge. This absorber minimises internal reflections within the wedge which in turn greatly enhances the performance of the wedge compared with a standard product.

The chart shows how a pyramidal textured Rexolite wedge with matching absorber from Precision Acoustics provides a 13dB reduction in the amplitude of the internally scattered noise compared with a pyramidal textured wedge without the benefit of a matching absorber.
