"Buying a new machine may not be efficient use of your CapEx"

In many cases retrofitting or re-engineering an existing machine tool may have distinct advantages for your production and maintenance requirements.

The capacity of the machine is known, existing tooling fits, and your operators and maintenance staff already know the machine.

Another major advantage of using the existing machine body is, in general, they were manufactured using castings which tend to be more stable than many fabricated machines of today.

The cost of a typical retrofit and refurbishment can be significantly less than the cost of a new machine, not only in respect of the cost of the machine itself, but also in operator and maintenance training, spares holding and tooling costs. The NUM system hardware (CNC, Servo drives and motors) will be covered by our 2 year warranty, many of our retrofit partners also offer a warranty for the whole machine and will offer you service packages.

Of course lead time for a retrofit to be completed is generally less than waiting for delivery of a newly built machine. Another advantage of using a local retrofit partner is that you don't suffer with any of the exchange rate issues usually associated with importing a complex machine tool from Europe or further afield.

So whilst it may seem a good investment to purchase new machine tools, it may be well worth looking at existing plant, certainly the larger or special machines, with a view to updating and extending the life of mechanically extremely well built machines.
