Smalley range of double turn and spiral retaining rings
The Smalley range of double turn, spiral retaining rings, which comes in
a wide variety of materials and surface finishes, is available from TFC
in the UK. Easily assembled by hand or as part of an automated process,
the rings offer an accurate fit where radial clearance is limited and
simply wind into a groove without any need for special tools. They are
quickly removed by applying a screwdriver to a notch in the ring. Swedish
company, Selden Masts is using the rings in its Furlex load distributor,
which is located in a ship's halyard swivel assembly. As the halyard
changes position, loads are equally distributed across two integral ball
races, held in place by the rings. This ensures easy furling and reefing
as well as increasing the life of the swivel.
