Cleaner network power

The latest version of ABB’s Dynacomp dynamic response compensator provides fast and smooth reactive power compensation to solve a variety of industrial power quality problems associated with fast variable loads. The system acts as an ultra-rapid and transient free capacitor bank with the reactive power step switching carried out by thyristors. These static switches offer a number of advantages over conventional contactor switched capacitor banks, including ultra-rapid power factor compensation; reduced voltage drop and flicker, and transient free switching.

Starting at a few hundred kVar, Dynacomp is available for applications up to several MVar (380 and 690V). In addition to reactive power compensation, the system also partially filters harmonic currents, thereby reducing total harmonic distortion and improving network power quality.

Dynacomp is equipped with ABB’s new Modbus-based RVT-D controller, which operates in open or closed loop, or with external trigger to compensate for voltage drops due to the active part of the load current. Such control ensures optimum flicker mitigation, even in a weak network.
