The main cause of damage to encoders is loading on the shaft. This is a particular issue when using encoders and measuring wheels for linear measurement. A fluctuation in material position or thickness causes stress in the bearing and reduces encoder life. Kubler has developed the spring arm to limit loading on the shaft and thus eliminate this problem. The device is available in the UK from OEM Automatic.
The arm is pre-tensioned to a maximum of 40N, which enables it to be mounted either above or below the belt. The measuring wheel can then be applied directly to the belt, roller, shaft or material being measured.
