Molex will be showcasing a number of their products at ECOC 2007, including the SMI plastic optical fibre (POF), LumaCore and cable routing products. To demonstrate how Molex’s SMI Interconnects provide high-speed and effective data connections for consumer and end-user applications, a camera will be connected to a laptop via POF cabling. Visitors to the Molex stand (12067/12068) will have the opportunity to see these products first-hand, as well as speak to our key product engineers on their project needs.
Molex's new SMI interconnects are ideal for saving space for compact consumer devices.
Based on the Molex small media interconnect (SMI), the SMI connector and transceiver interconnect system offers seamless, low-cost optical data linking, as well as space saving qualities through its reduced size and added surface mount capabilities.
SMI offers duplex, push-pull positive latching with a safe-release mechanism for consumer applications, providing secure and safe de-mating features. The easy no-epoxy, no-polish field termination process with specialised tooling gives installers quick and simple field terminations. Compatible with IEEE 802.3u fast Ethernet data communications standards, these optical data links are well-suited for a variety of applications, industrial, home/office network PC and server applications.
Bringing optical interconnect products into extreme environments, Molex’s LC2 metallic optical connectors feature high-performance ceramic ferrules available for single-mode, multi-mode and angle-polish applications.
Innovatively designed LC2 connectors are a ruggedised, all-metal-housed version of the familiar LC small form factor optical connectors that incorporate the ceramic ferrule based, LumaCore optical terminus technology. The terminus is designed to achieve superior optical performance in a durable housing that is 100% compatible with the industry standard LC connectors and adapters.
The LC2 connectors are designed specifically to withstand harsh environments - capable of continuous operating temperatures up to +135°C, with short-term temperatures of up to +150°C when used with high temperature optical fibres. They also offer hex register alignment to enable tuning of individual fibre connections.
Available in multiple boot styles including straight, 45 and 90 degrees, LC2 connectors support many cable sizes and applications including 900µm, as well as 1.20mm, 1.60mm, 1.80mm and 2.00mm (0.079”, 0.047”, 0.063” and 0.070”). They also work as a high-performance, discrete-fibre termination product for severe environments, including military commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), aviation and aerospace applications.
Molex has also added multi-fibre and single-fibre versions to its rugged, high-performance optical industrial connector system.
Combining the high performance of a fibre optic connector with the versatility of a sealed rugged connector, the multi-fibre push-on connector (MPO) and subscriber connector (SC) are the two newest additions to the Molex Optical Industrial IP67-rated sealed system offering. The SC version provides designers with more ways to apply optical connectors in harsh environments, and is available in single-fibre, while the MPO version is offered in 8 to12 fibre counts.
Additional features, such as moisture and dust protection, the bayonet-style mechanical latch on assemblies, and removable connector that provides sealing between the adapter’s mating surface, make the optical industrial connector system ideal for a variety of indoor and outdoor applications.
Developed to address mechanical design requirements, Molex Fibre optic EMI shielding adapters allow for more design flexibility by increasing shielding effectiveness and enhancing front panel aesthetics compared to traditional plastic adapters.
With its multi-format 45 degree rear mount single screw, this new version offers internally mounted simplex LC Connectors to mate directly to LC, MU or LX.5 connectors on the customer facing port. Additionally, the LC style now offers quad configurations with front or rear mounting options, in addition to duplex, while both SC and MPO provide 45 degree simplex rear mount single screw styles.
The 33rd annual European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) will take place on 16th to 20th September, 2007 at the ICC in Berlin. The sell-out event will feature over 300 exhibitors and a comprehensive speaker line-up, including some of the world’s leading technical developers, both commercial and academic, addressing key industry topics.
