Controller both compact and rugged

A new mid-range yet powerful programmable controller that is both compact and rugged has been launched by Telemecanique, a brand of Schneider Electric. Called the Modicon M340, it is configured using Schneider Electric’s Unity Pro easy-to-use software. It also complements the established Modicon Premium and Quantum Unity automation controller families, aiming to provide complete control for machine manufacturers, system integrators and end-users alike.

High performance, multi-tasked processing and support for all five of the IEC61131/3 programming languages, Modicon M340 is reportedly capable of handling the most demanding of applications. The processor incorporates up to 4MB of internal memory, an SD card slot, a USB port and two additional communication ports (Ethernet, CANopen or Modbus). Modicon M340 also benefits from the Schneider Electric’s experience in counting, positioning and regulation.

The incorporation of the SD Card enables data to be automatically backed up to an internal Flash memory and the application within the SD Card. No battery is required, reducing a maintenance consideration. The ‘Plug and Load’ technology means applications can easily be updated and, for machine manufacturers, multiple machines can be simply and consistently setup. Data files for recipes, traceability or maintenance can be stored and subsequently accessed from a PC or by simple ‘drag and drop’ via FTP.

Applications are maintained via the Modicon M340’s USB port or over Ethernet. Machines can be accessed from anywhere with complete security via modem or high speed DSL links. Depending on the technology chosen, programming can be performed online, programs transferred, data files accessed and thanks to the embedded Web Server, also managed remotely via a web browser for operation and diagnostics.

Modicon M340 fits the tightest panel spaces thanks to its compact dimensions. It is flexible and accepts from 4 to 12 modules in a rack with up to 64 discrete I/O per module. All I/O modules are "hot swap" and are automatically reconfigured by the CPU should they need replacement. Modicon M340 is rugged and withstands the most severe industrial environments as well as meeting, and in most instances exceeding, the limits imposed by the relevant IEC standards.

Modicon M340 offers synergy with all Schneider Electric’s automation products, from control to supervision, and from monitoring to machine data acquisition. Everything is designed to ease integration, speed up development and simplify installation, use and maintenance.

Modicon M340 conforms to all international standards, marine classifications and the RoHS European Directive on environmental protection.
