Sealing Sub-Sea Fibre Optic Connectors

DP Seals has developed special high-performance seals and boots for a range of sub-sea optical fibre/hybrid cable connectors manufactured by Seacon Europe (www.seaconeurope.com). This novel cable gland arrangement has been developed to provide both anchorage and sealing for each layer within the cable construction, including outer sheath, steel tube and individual optical fibres. The seals and boots are made from a specially formulated hydrogenated nitrile material, chosen for its high tensile strength, salt water tolerance and effectiveness at high pressure and low temperature. Two nitrile sealing glands seal the outer sheath and steel tube, locked into place with tapered sleeves to ensure that controlled compression is maintained at all times. additional boots provide secondary sealing to the individual optical fibres and prevent the ingress of pressure compensating fluid from the connector into the steel tube.
